High ping and server lag are related but not identical. High ping is network delay between a player and the server. Server lag occurs when the game process cannot keep up with simulation, saves, mods, or player activity.
Determine which problem you have
- If one player is affected, test that player's connection, VPN, Wi-Fi, downloads, and distance from the server location.
- If every player is affected at the same time, check server CPU, memory, disk, console warnings, player count, entity count, and scheduled tasks.
- If lag began after a mod, plugin, map, or setting change, reverse that change and test again.
Quick checks
- Stop large downloads, uploads, backups, or updates and allow active tasks to finish.
- Check for repeating console errors that can consume resources.
- Make sure the server has free storage and is not reaching its resource limits.
- Warn players, perform a safe restart, and compare performance afterward.
- Test with fewer mods or plugins when possible.
For support, provide the date and time with timezone, affected player count, server location, measured ping, resource usage, and what changed before the lag began. A screenshot of a single speed test is not enough to diagnose server performance by itself.
